Get your Driving Record

Your driving record helps us understand what the court sees when they look at your history. A clean record can be one of the strongest arguments for a reduced charge or a better sentence — but we need the actual document, not your recollection of what’s on it. This page covers how to obtain it; we can also obtain it for you as part of your case if that’s easier.

Virginia Drivers

If you have a Virginia license

Most Virginia drivers can purchase and download their record directly from the DMV. It’s the fastest option and gives us the PDF format we need.

The DMV also mails physical copies within five business days of purchase, but downloading the PDF is faster and easier to share with us.

Please send the PDF the DMV provides — phone photos of paper printouts are hard to read in court documents and slow us down.

Go to the Virginia DMV website

Go to the DMV’s Record Request page at dmv.virginia.gov/online-services/record-request.

Click “Driving Record”

Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the “Driving Record” button. Follow the prompts to log in or create an account.

Pay the fee and view the record in your browser

Pay the fee and the record will display in your browser. From there you can order a mailed copy or save the record as a PDF.

Save the record as a PDF and send it to us

You can re-download it within five days of purchase at no charge if needed.

Out-of-State Drivers

If you have an out-of-state license

Virginia courts hear cases from drivers across the country. If your license isn’t from Virginia, you’ll need to request your record from your home state. Each state runs its own process — some offer online downloads, others require mail-in requests.

Find your state below and follow the link to its record-request page. Once you have the record, save it as a PDF and send it to us.

Or have us obtain it for you

If you’d rather not handle this yourself, we can obtain the record for you as part of your case. Ask about it during your consultation.

Once you have your record

Get in touch and we’ll let you know the best way to send it to us. If you’ve already had your consultation, the email instructions you received cover this.
